母子世帯の貧困率は非常に高い
母子世帯の貧困率は55.3%（1995年）53.0%（2001年）であり、貧困ギャップ率は18.7%（1995年）、18.3%（2001年）である。母子世帯の半数以上が、貧困層に陥り、苦しい生活を余儀なくされている。
母子世帯は数がすくないため、貧困世帯に占める割合は、95年、01年とも、5%以下となっているが、貧困世帯の代表例といえる。日本の離婚率は、他の先進諸国と比べると皮下的低いが、近年は上昇傾向にある為、今後も離別を原因とした母子世帯の増加が懸念される。『国勢調査』によれば、89年移行、離婚率は一貫して上昇しており、89年の1.26から98年には、1.94（24万3,000県）となっている。
単身高齢者の貧困率も非常に高い
単身高齢者世帯は、貧困世帯に占める割合が95年は21.5%、2001年は20.9%と大きいため、単身高齢者世帯の趨勢は、日本の貧困レベルの変化に大きな影響を与える。単身高齢者世帯の貧困率は、47.9%（1995年）、43.0%（2001年）であり、貧困ギャップ率は20.2%（1005年）、16.0%（2001年）である。単身高齢者世帯には、貧困ラインのすぐ下（年間の手取り所得が120何年程度）の人も多いが、ほぼ無所得（手取り60万円程度）に極端な貧困層も多い。
非高齢単身世帯の貧困率が大きな上昇
95年から2,001年にかけて大きな上昇が見られたのが、高齢者世帯を除いた単身世帯である。同世帯が貧困世帯に占める割合が、12.4%（1995年）から20.2%（2001年）へと急増している。貧困率は20.0%（1995年）から26.9%（2001年）となっており、貧困ギャップ率は6.4から9.6に拡大している。すなわち、90年代半ば以降、「仕事を引退した人の貧困」に加えて「働き盛り世代の貧困」が表面化してきたといえる。
若年世帯の貧困の増加
世帯主の年齢別の貧困レベルを見ると、29歳以下の若年世帯において貧困率が相当上昇しているのが分かる。1995年の20.7%に対し、2001年には、２５．９％、貧困ギャップロつは5.3から8.6に上昇している。この背景として、若年失業率が、根幹に大幅に上昇したことがあげられる。
核家族と3世代家族
核家族の貧困世帯に占める割合は、95年から2001年の間に30.9%から23.9%にがん少子、貧困率や強度も減少傾向が続いている。また、3世代世帯の貧困率も95年、98年、2001年と一貫して8%台であり、全世帯の半分と比較的低い。
核家族世帯や3世代世帯の貧困率が低い理由の一つは”世帯主以外の家族の労働への参加にある。特に3世代世帯では、世帯主、世帯主の配偶者以外の家計構成員の労働所得が貧困の削減に大きな役割を果たしている。
