1. Cost-Effective way to target the poor by CASHPOR
Hampstead Heath, London in March
CASHPOR
Facility Name: (): Case_StudiesID: -1285835873
I see the two parts of this topic as very much interrelated. We are not talking about methodology for reaching the poorest on the one hand and covering costs on the other. We're talking about cost-effective targeting or cost-effective identification of the poor. Now, why must we put some effort into identifying the poor? Why can't we just offer our services to everybody in the rural areas and let them decide whether they want to participate? Well, this is one of the relatively unknown secrets, I think, of the success of the Grameen Bank. Not widely known is the fact that it is exclusively for people below a certain asset wealth line. In the case of Grameen Bank, it's 50 decimals of average agricultural land and household assets of not more than the value of one acre of agricultural land in the area concerned. So Grameen is exclusively for households below that line. And this was developed because of Professor Yunus' observation that many...so-called poverty-focused programs throughout Look ay the detail of this Case_Study

Kothmale Community Radio Internet
Facility Name: (): Case_StudiesID: -1055932882
Spectacular growth in information technology, and specifically the Internet, has the potential to offer a new set of tools for rural development. However, it requires special efforts to create appropriate access models for those who can neither afford Internet access nor have the language capacity to understand the content. The purpose of the Kothmale Community Radio Internet project was to test and demonstrate an access model that reduces these barriers and empowers marginalized communities in rural areas, enabling them to benefit from ICTs to expand their knowledge base and thereby support their efforts to tackle their development problems themselves. In recent years the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB)-initiated cooperative movement has led to a substantial increase in milk prduction in India. The two main reasons for this increase are the efficient collection of milk and higher profit for producers, both of which have to some degree been influences by information technology. Since its inception in 1992 the organization has been providing small loans to [poor urban] women for income generating activities and has encouraged women to save.... The organization has followed the Grameen Bank model and so far has a membership of more than 15,000 women and has disbursed loans of more than 87 million Taka [US$2 million], with an average loan size of about 4,000 Taka or US$100. The rate of recovery is almost 100 percent. The organization has experienced tremendous growth in terms of volume of operation and membership coverage. In 1992-93, we had membership of only 1,200 women, which increased to more than 15,000 in 1996. Our present loan outstanding is more than 28 million Taka [US$600,000]. But if we are to fly to a poverty-free world, we must have institutional sustainability as well. A number of factors contribute to organizational sustainability, but here I shall talk about the three main ones. Look ay the detail of this Case_Study
